Construction Manager
construction

One of our regular Construction Managers is Robert Van Goethem. Robert tells us what is involved.

The Construction Manager has the responsibility of translating the director’s requirements and wishes into a practical, finished and safe stage set. There are a series of planning meetings in preparation for a production but at the very first meeting, the Construction Manager gives advice as to what can and cannot be built.

In partnership with the Decor Manager a detailed scale plan is produced and once this has been agreed and a budget for the production is allocated, the Construction Manager will purchase the required materials ready for set build.

The Construction Manager takesconstruction charge of set build and oversees the build according to the plan. He is also responsible for safety and the standard of workmanship of the set. It is the Construction Manager who must also implement any changes required should the director be unhappy with access to the set by the actors or the crew.

When each section of the set has been completed it will be handed over to the Decor manager for the next phase in the construction. The final job for the Construction Manager is to oversee the demolition of the set on Sunday morning and to ensure that the set is packed away correctly.
